‘A Desecrated Serenity’: Don McCullin at Hauser & Wirth

NEW YORK — Hauser & Wirth is set to present its first exhibition dedicated to the internationally acclaimed photojournalist Sir Don McCullin, CBE. Coinciding with the artist’s 90th birthday, the exhibition, titled A Desecrated Serenity, will be his most comprehensive U.S. presentation to date.

The show offers an in-depth look at both the beauty and brutality found within McCullin’s expansive archive. It brings together over fifty works, including a mix of gritty, unfiltered images from battlefields and postwar Britain alongside his more recent painterly European vistas and meticulously crafted still lifes. Seldom-seen archival materials and historical ephemera will also be on display.

McCullin’s oeuvre is defined by two powerful, contrasting forces: an innate and profound compassion for humanity and an exceptional mastery of composition and process. The exhibition highlights this duality, showcasing how he applied his unique artistic vision across vastly different subjects.

The gallery will host a reception with the artist on Tuesday, September 24, from 6 pm to 8 pm, offering a unique opportunity to celebrate the career of one of the most significant figures in photojournalism.

Exhibit: A Desecrated Serenity, Don McCullin, Hauser & Wirth, New York, 3 September through 8 November 2025.
