Museum Folkwang to Spotlight Unseen Work of Photographer Germaine Krull

ESSEN, Germany – The Museum Folkwang is preparing to unveil a new exhibition focused on the photographic and journalistic work of the late artist Germaine Krull. The museum, which has housed Krull’s estate since 1995, is presenting a new approach to her legacy by showcasing her extensive written work, which includes autobiographical texts, political reports and photobook maquettes.

While Krull is widely known for her avant-garde photographic work from the 1920s and 1930s, this exhibition will bring new focus to her later creative phases, which have been largely overlooked by researchers. The move is based on the understanding that writing was a constant companion throughout Krull’s career.

The exhibition and accompanying publication will also offer a new perspective on Krull’s life and artistic work after she permanently departed from Europe at the beginning of World War II. By presenting her photographic and journalistic oeuvres in tandem, the project provides a more complete picture of Krull’s transcultural life and career.

Exhibit: Germaine Krull, Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany, 27 November 2025 through 15 March 2026.
