National Portrait Gallery to Unveil First Exhibition Focused on Cecil Beaton’s Fashion Photography

LONDON — The National Portrait Gallery is set to premiere a landmark exhibition dedicated solely to the fashion photography of renowned 20th-century photographer Cecil Beaton. Titled Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World, the show will run from 9 October 2025 to 11 January 2026, and promises to be the first to exclusively explore his trailblazing contributions to the field.

The exhibition will feature a vast array of Beaton’s portraits of some of the last century’s most iconic figures. Visitors can expect to see images of Hollywood legends such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Marlon Brando, alongside royalty including Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. The show will also highlight his portraits of artistic titans like Lucian Freud and Salvador Dalí.

Curated by photographic historian and Vogue Contributing Editor Robin Muir, the exhibition will chart Beaton’s meteoric rise and distinguished legacy, revealing how his signature style—a blend of Edwardian glamour and modern elegance—revitalized fashion photography and propelled him to the pinnacles of creative achievement.

‘Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World’ will publish in conjunction with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

“Cecil Beaton needs little introduction,” Muir said in a release. “His impact spans the worlds of fashion, photography, and design. Unquestionably one of the leading visionary forces of the British 20th century, he also made a lasting contribution to the artistic lives of New York, Paris, and Hollywood. It’s a delight to return to the National Portrait Gallery with this exhibition.”

The exhibition will feature approximately 250 items, including photographs, letters, sketches, and costumes, showcasing Beaton’s career from his earliest experiments with his first camera to his celebrated work as an official war photographer and his captures of the elegance of the post-war era. The journey culminates with his most famous triumph: the costumes and sets for the musical and film, My Fair Lady.

The National Portrait Gallery has a long and storied history with Beaton. His work was the subject of the institution’s first-ever dedicated photography exhibition in 1968, a show created in collaboration with the photographer himself. Victoria Siddall, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, noted the significance of this history.

“We are honoured to be working with Vogue’s Robin Muir, whose exhaustive research, vision, and flair will guide us through Beaton’s innovative and storied influences on the fashion world,” said Siddall.

Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World offers a rare opportunity to delve into the core of the influential artist’s career, cementing his legacy as a pivotal figure who elevated fashion and portrait photography to an art form.
